The University of Sunderland has been strategically involved in the conception, funding and creation of the National Glass Centre. Situated adjacent to the award winning buildings of the University's St.Peter's Campus, the National Glass Centre maintains a close relationship with the Glass, Architectural Glass and Ceramics Programmes of the School of Arts, Design and Media.

Glass and Ceramics are taught at undergraduate levels within the National Glass Centre. Glass is one of the most prestigious and high profile areas of both the School of Art, Design and Media and the University, and has achieved an excellent record particularly in research in Glass.

In 1988, the University launched the Institute for International Research in Glass (IIRG), the aim of which is to promote and facilitate research in Glass in Sunderland at a national and international level. IIRG seeks to create new opportunities for collaborative enterprises and funding, whilst providing a research focus that is complementary to the National Glass Centres programme of events for debate and enquiry on all issues in glass. Together the National Glass Centre and IIRG offer a platform for the University's Glass department - one of the largest and most prestigious in Europe and has a distinguished teaching team of international artists and scholars.
